Jason Predicts the 2020 Oscar Decade

Kenan and I had an idea to see who could best predict the upcoming decade for the Oscars.  We decided to have two categories: who, having already been nominated, would win their first Oscar and who would receive their first Oscar nomination in a specific category.  Each draft would have 6 total picks with 5 for acting and a non-acting pick.  We had a draft and these were my selections

First Time Oscar Winners

Kenan Pick 1: Adam Driver

Jason Pick 1: Amy Adams

Kenan picked first in this draft.  After he took Adam Driver, my first pick was Amy Adams.  She was top on my list as she has had so many previous Oscar nominations and has come close so many times of the previous decade, that I feel like she is a lock for one this year.  She has already been nominated for 6 Oscars and I think will finally win one this decade

Kenan Pick 2: Bradley Cooper

Jason Pick 2: Michael Fassbender

Michael Fassbender is also one I’m kind of shocked has not received a win yet.  He arguably should’ve won it for 12 Years a Slave as he was terrifying as a plantation owner.  He has a lot of range, from playing Magneto in the X-Men movies to playing smaller roles such as in Steve Jobs & Prometheus.

Kenan Pick 3: Saoirse Ronan

Jason Pick 3: Michelle Williams

source[1]

Michelle Williams is an actress I don’t think we give enough credit.  Blue Valentine, Manchester By the Sea, My Week with Marilyn, The Greatest Showman, and Brokeback Mountain are a few of the movies she’s made the past decade.  If she keeps making similar choices, she’ll have a golden statue soon

Kenan Pick 4: Margot Robbie

Jason Pick 4: Woody Harrelson

source[1]

Woody needs no introduction.  From his rise to prominence on Cheers to White Men Can’t Jump to Three Billboards outside Ebbing Missouri to True Detectice, he’s shown range for both comedy & drama and the longer time goes on, the more chances he gets a career win for an upcoming project.

Kenan Pick 5: Ryan Gosling

Jason Pick 5: Lin Manuel Miranda for Best Song (non-acting)

giphy[1]

I think I stole this one from Kenan as we both love Lin, but I think this is money in the bank.  We already know that Into the Heights, The Little Mermaid & Hamilton are coming out over the next couple of years and I’m willing to wager he’ll get an Oscar win coming up and come another step towards EGOTing.

Kenan Pick 6: Greta Gerwig for Best Director (non-acting)

Jason Pick 6: Matt Damon

giphy[1]

Matt Damon has won an Oscar before but not for acting and I’m predicting he’s going to get a win for acting in the upcoming decade.  Whether he’s being saved by Tom Hanks/Jessica Chastain/Matthew McConaughey or being Jason Bourne, Damon has range and is a proven movie star.  It’s about time he break through and win an Oscar for what he’s known for.

First Time Oscar Nominees

Jason Pick 1: Steve Buscemi

giphy[1]

I was kind of stunned when doing my research to find out he has never been nominated for an Oscar.  He’s gotten award recognition for Boardwalk Empire and lots of other things but never an Oscar nominations.  He’ll get one soon

Kenan Pick 1: Michael B Jordan

Jason Pick 2: Ewan McGregor

source[1]

Obi-Wan has also never been nominated for an Oscar.  He’s been in some great crowdpleasers as well as some great roles such as Fargo (series) and he’s due for a nomination as soon as the right role comes out.

Kenan Pick 2: Donald Glover

Jason Pick 3: John Goodman

giphy[1]

John Goodman is one of my favorite actors ever.  He can do no wrong in my book and its a travesty he’s not been nominated yet.  He has been in The Artist & Argo just in the past decade which were Best Picture Winners and has been in some of the best shows and iconic movies of all time.  I don’t know if it will be in a Coen Brothers movie or another role but Goodman deserves a nomination.  The only reason I didn’t take him higher is I was concerned with his age as often they go to younger actors but Goodman deserves to be invited to the ceremony as a nominee.

Kenan Pick 3: Emily Blunt

Jason Pick 4: Kevin Bacon

giphy[1]

I know this is a little unorthodox but my theory on this list is to pick people who will get “career” oscar nominations and Kevin Bacon has been in some great movies and has never been nominated.  He’s done some comedy, some dancing, some horror and some drama and I think he’ll get a career nomination soon.

Kenan Pick 4: Chadwick Boseman

Jason Pick 5: Jim Carrey

source[1]

Again, I am shocked that he has never been nominated for an Oscar.  Although he is primarily known for being a comedic actor, he has the acting chops to be dramatic with the best of them.  The Truman Show, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind & I Love You Philip Morris show his range and he’ll get a nomination coming up.

Kenan Pick 5: Ryan Coogler for Best Director (non-acting)

Jason Pick 6: Rian Johnson for Best Director (non-acting)

giphy[1]

From the director of The Last Jedi & Knives Out, I think that Rian Johnson will get a Best Director nod before the end of the decade.  I love his movies very much and whenever his name is attached to something, I know we are going to be in for a treat.  He was nominated for Best Screenplay this past year but I’m predicting he will be get an Oscar nomination.

Kenan Pick 6: Taron Egerton

Those are Kenan & my picks for who will win and be nominated for the upcoming decade. We’ll see who picks more after the conclusion of the 2030 Oscar ceremony.  Don’t forget to read Kenan’s explanations as well.
