Here is my ranking of my favorite movies of 2022. My rule here is if they were released in 2022, I count it but if it was a limited release in 2021, I did not count it so many of last years Oscar nominees I did not include. I’m also including the Marvel Special Presentations from Disney+ as they’re not technically TV shows and I wanted to include them on my list.
63. Morbius
It was a movie
62. Moonfall
It was fun at the time in the theater but I couldn’t tell you a thing about it
61. Firestarter
It’s fine
60. A Madea Homecoming
I’m a fan of Madea and glad she’s back. This is the point on the list where I enjoyed everything from this point higher, I just enjoyed some more than others
59. Strange World
I enjoyed it but in my opinion it wasn’t as memorable as some of Disney animations previous movies
58. Hocus Pocus 2
I watch the original every October along with Young Frankenstein. I really love spending time with the characters and although I wish the finale had a different ending, I really enjoyed it and hope they make a third one.
57. Kimi
A fun thriller on HBO Max. I hope it’s still on there
56. Dog
Channing Tatum and a dog. What more could you want
55. The Adam Project
Enjoyed Ryan Reynolds in this Netflix movie
54. Sonic the Hedgehog 2
I could watch Jim Carrey do this for at least 2 more movies
53. Blonde
Ana de Armas is quickly becoming one of my favorite actresses.
52. DC League of Superpets
I’ll love anything The Rock and Kevin Hart do, even in animation
51. Amsterdam
The fact that this is based loosely on a true story is crazy
50. The Bobs Burgers Movie
Haven’t seen as much of the show as I should have but I laughed a good bit
49. A Christmas Story Christmas
The original is one of my favorite Christmas movies. Its fun to see all the actors reprise their roles
48. Don’t Worry Darling
Guessed the “twist” at the beginning of the movie but still was a fun ride. I’m very interested in the inevitable behind the scenes book
47. The Lost City
Channing Tatum Sandra Bullock rom-com with Daniel Radcliff as a villain. Yes please
46. Jurassic World: Dominion
Love seeing the original cast back but the movie felt more like a movie about locusts than a movie about dinosaurs
45. Lightyear
Really enjoyed this Toy Story spinoff that was more like a great episode of Star Trek. Glad they made it
44. Minions: The Rise of Gru
The day will come when I get tired of the minions. That day has not arrived. I’ve said before Minions are the modern day Cosmo Kramer in that you can put them into any situation and they work
43. Father of the Bride
A really fun remake and it was so good to see Andy Garcia and Gloria Estefan in a comedy. It seemed like it came and went but I think this one is underrated
42. Black Adam
The hierarchy of DC was going to change, we were told. I enjoyed the movie but it wasn’t as great as I think it could’ve been. Still fun to watch The Rock in anything.
41. The Gray Man
Fun action movie and probably the first in a Netflix franchise. Looking forward to see where Ryan Gosling and company go with the series
40. Devotion
Glen Powell had a type of movie he wanted to star in this year as this is his second movie where he played a military pilot. Pretty good
39. Three Thousand Years of Longing
If you haven’t seen it, let me just say this movie is crazy. Some of the individual scenes have stuck with me since seeing the movie. Idris Elba is really great in this.
38. Uncharted
I’ve never played the video games so I went in expecting an Indiana Jones type adventure and it delivered what was promised. I hope they make some more.
37. Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore
Its a bummer to me that Warner Brothers declined to continue this series. I enjoyed it and thought this was a solid entry and I wish we had one more to properly wrap everything up. But it was really great and an improvement from Crimes of Grindlewald.
36. The Man from Toronto
Another Netflix movie that was pretty fun, Kevin Hart is a guy who is mistaken for Woody Harrelson who is an assassin. It’s exactly the kind of movie that you think it is and its so much fun.
35. X
I caught this on streaming after it had left theaters and really enjoyed this one. Reminded me a lot of Texas Chainsaw Massacre. If you’re in the mood for a good horror flix, give this one a chance
34. Ticket of Paradise
Really fun rom com with George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Not much more to say but I had a really fun time at the theater with these two.
33. See How They Run
I chose to see this at the theater solely because it stared Sam Rockwell and Saoirse Ronan and it was a really fun who-dun-it. It’s currently on HBO Max and if you’re looking for a really fun mystery thats also funny, check it out.
32. The Bad Guys
I’ll admit that I wasn’t looking forward to this one that much because the trailers honestly didn’t grab me. But I watched it on netflix one day and was pleasantly surprised. Some pretty good animation and definitely worth a watch.
31. The Menu
Another fun one that is a horror/satire/comedy. Ralph Fines stars with one of my new favorites Anya Taylor-Joy and there are some incredible scenes as it builds. There is a lot to talk about and I’m hoping more people catch it on streaming.
30. Phantom of the Open
Watching this smaller movie with my dad as he’s a big golfer and the trailers made him laugh. This comedy based on a true story stars Mark Rylance as perhaps the worlds worst golfer who finds himself playing in the British Open. Very relatable and again, very funny throughout.
29. Turning Red
Since it went straight to Disney+, it felt like this came and went, but I really enjoyed this one. I love the themes and the mother daughter relationship and hope PIXAR continues to make originals like this
28. Downton Abbey: A New Age
full disclosure, I’ve never seen any episode of the show or the previous movies. But I went into it hoping to see if it stood on its on and I really really loved it. I’ve added the show to my evergrowing list and I hope to get to it eventually.
27. I Wanna Dance with Somebody
This is the last movie I saw in 2022 and really enjoyed it. I think we all love Whitney Houston and it was a great look into her life. Stanley Tucci stole the show as her manager.
26. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent
So I love meta humor and this movie was made for people like me. All the references to Nicholas Cage movies were the cherry on top but I love any movie where actors play exaggerated versions of themselves.
25. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
This movie was always going to be a bittersweet experience because I love the characters of Wakanda but the tragic loss of Chadwick Boseman hangs over the movie until it starts. I enjoyed the movie and thought they did the absolute best they could. I loved the extra focus on Shuri and Namor is a great antagonist. Looking forward to the next one.
24. Thor: Love and Thunder
I went back and forth which MCU to list higher and I think I have to go with Thor just because I laughed so much during this movie. Some have criticized this movie for the humor and saying it’s not as great and Yada Yada Yada but for me, the screaming goats got me every time.
23. Avatar: The Way of Water
I looked forward to this return trip to Pandora and the trip was worth the wait. I’m looking forward to the next one and I think the visuals are Oscar worthy. James Cameron does not fail.
22. Death on the Nile
An all star cast and another Agatha Christy murder mystery. Although it wasn’t as great as Murder on the Orient Express in my opinion, I really enjoyed this one and I hope Kenneth Braunagh continues to make more of these (an ongoing theme on my list)
21. The Banshees of Inisherin
My list is ranked in order of my enjoyment and it was quality, this would be near the top. I definitely loved it, just enjoyed some other ones a little more. I saw this in a 150 seat theater and I was the only person in attendance and I wish there would’ve been more in the crowd as some of these scenes are quiet funny. Colin Farrell deserves and Oscar nomination.
20. Prey
I haven’t seen many of the predator movies and I’d put this one right up there with the original. I hope they continue with this road and drop predators in various historical contexts.
19. Elvis
I’m a fan of Baz Lurhman so I was looking forward to this movie. I thought the performances were great and as always with movies like these, I loved the songs.
18. Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
This is my lone stop motion animation movie and it was so good. I put this on a couple of weeks ago and I was so moved by the story. If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. It will move you to tears in some scenes and make you laugh in others.
17. Bullet Train
From the producers of John Wick comes this very fun action movie set on a train. Quickly paced and so much fun, Brad Pitt finds himself on a speed train full of assassins.
16. The Woman King
Viola Davis needs to get an Oscar nomination in this wonderfully acted drama. I wouldn’t be surprised if this snuck into the Best Picture race.
15. Where the Crawdads Sing
I’ve seen this movie a couple of times now and it’s just as good at home as it was in the theater. I haven’t read the book but if it’s as good as the movie, I need to add it to my list.
14. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
The highest of this years MCU movies, it takes this to spot for me because of Elizabeth Olsen and the Scarlett Witch. Loved how Sam Raimi the movie is and I personally loved the music battle.
13. The Fablemans
One of the best to ever do it makes an autobiographical film about himself and his family. Spielberg is so good at capturing the magic of movies and this is one of the best movies of the year. Expect some Oscars.
12. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special
I don’t know what Christmas is but Christmas time is here. This holiday special was so funny and I’m glad we got a spotlight on Mantis and Drax in preparation for Guardians 3.
11. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story
You all know I love Weird Al and I thought this very true with 0 inaccuracies was fantastic. What better way to salute the king of parody than with a parody of biopics.
10. Scream
This was the first movie i saw in theaters this year and it’s really stuck with me. I’m also a little biased because this movie was shot in Wilmington and I remember when the cast and crew were in town and it was a big deal.
9. Glass Onion
Everyone’s favorite southern detective Benoit Blanc in another adventure this time solving a murder on a billionaires private island. I look forward to rewatching it to catch all the things I missed the first time but it’s a worthy follow up to Knives Out
8. Jack*** Forever
Watching Johnny Knoxville and the gang doesn’t get any worse with age. Watching and hanging out with the crew was a blast in the theater and I hope they continue with more
7. Werewolf By Night
My highest ranked Marvel project is Werewolf by Night and I absolutely loved it. As a fan of the classic Universal horror movies of the 1930s, I totally dug the aesthetic and this fun little story.
6. Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers
When I heard there was a movie that adapts our favorite chipmunks, I thought it would be fine. Then throw in The Lonely Island and John Mullany doing one of the most meta movies of the year and it became one of my favorites of the year.
5. Ambulance
I trust Jake Gyllenhall and I thought it would be a great theater watch but I am shocked just how much I loved Michal Bays newest movie. Some of the camera drone zooms are crazy but I just loved loved loved this movie and saw it several times in the theater.
4. The Batman
My highest ranked superhero movie of the year is the newest adaption of Batman. I’m not sure entirely of his Bruce Wayne but I believe Robert Pattinson might be one of, if not my favorite Batman. Paul Dano is also creepily great as the Riddler and lots of the villains rogues gallery were top notch
3. RRR
I was SO tempted to put this at my #1 spot. Really, I struggled with the top 3 as any of my top 3 could’ve ended up at the top. RRR is unlike any more you’ve ever seen. It’s like if you took the crazy action scenes from the Fast & Furious franchise, add in a musical number or 2 and throw it in the loose plot of The Departed and you have an Indian movie that is such a treat. I wish I could pay money to see this in a theater full of people but you should watch it on Netflix.
2. Everything Everywhere All At Once
The most unique movie I’ve seen this year and arguably the “best” movie I’ve seen this year. Michelle Yeoh is so great and I hope this movie wins all the awards. I believe the best line I’ve heard this year was the “in another life, I’d have enjoyed doing laundry with you.” I love multiverse movies and this is one of the best I’ve ever seen.
1. Top Gun: Maverick
At the end of the day, I think my favorite movie of this past year has to be Top Gun: Maverick. I saw this one 3 times in the theater, not including at home viewings and I rarely see movies 3 times in theaters. The entire movie just keeps you on the edge of your seat. I hadn’t seen the original and watched it right before seeing the new one and I believe this one is superior than the original classic. Tom Cruise is the king of the box office in 2022
